Re: Pagan Festival
Wed, July 27, 2005 - 7:30 AMJust received this Summerset Update:
We have a wonderful variety of speakers lined up this year. Three Cranes Grove is performing our main ritual this year. We have Hugan the Bard as well as Columbus local Willie Phoenix planned as musical entertainment. Then add in the fact that Camp Crooked Lane is wonderful - rolling tree-lined meadows, wooded hiking trails, a calm lake complete with bull frog serenades each night...Summerset is lining up to be fantastic! The Summerset flyers are being printed & distribution will begin within the next 48 hrs.
I will post another update once I have the flyer on this festival. -

Counting Our Blessings
As another Summer comes to an end, and the days grow shorter, we
gather together with friends for one last celebration of the season.
Summerset, now in it's new home is the PCCO's end of Summer
festival, and also our public celebration of the Mabon Holiday. We
invite you to join us at Camp Crooked Lane near Mt Gilead, Ohio, this
labor day weekend as we come together for workshops, entertainment
and fellowship.
This year as always we have a variety of different Workshops,
including an Intro to Crowley with Lord Shadow, Continental Celtic
Dieties with Mike Dangler, and several Pagan Parenting workshops. We
have two authors joining us for Summerset this year, Nema, author of
the book Maat Magic will be teaching a workshop; we also will be
featuring the final public appearance of Quill Mastercraft who will
be here to discuss her new book. Entertainment at Summerset this year
is sure to please, we have Hugin the Bard performing one night, as
well as local favorite, Willie Phoenix. We are also pleased to
announce the return of our Men's and Women's mysteries rituals. Our
main ritual this year will be lead by Three Cranes Grove.
Meals will once again be available at the general store for a
small fee, a menu will be posted at camp. As always we will be having
our PCCO Potluck dinner; however, this year due to numerous requests,
we will be moving it to Saturday evening. We are also proud to
announce the return of the Warrior Games, which will be organized by
Green Man.
Those who attended The Greening this year already know about the
natural beauty and wonderful energy that is Camp Crooked Lane. This
site affords us many benefits, such as 3 separate bonfire areas,
easily accessible tenting areas, and no large hills to climb.
This year the PCCO's Community Service Committee is asking that
if you have old cell phones that are no longer in use, that you bring
them to Summerset as we will be collecting and recycling them for
charity.
We will once again be presenting the Dauterman Award at
Summerset. This award is given in the name of Leslie Dauterman, one
of the most spirited and active members the PCCO has ever seen. She
served as President, and on various committees. Her enthusiasm for
this organization was unmatched, she often gave of her time and
sometimes even her own money to make sure the PCCO kept running.
Several years ago Leslie passed away. Those of us who remember her
and her actions thought it fitting that this award be created in her
honor. This award is presented to someone in the community who have
gone above and beyond the call odd duty to the pagan community.
All in all this Summerset is shaping up to be one of our best
ever, and we look forward to seeing you there.
Blessings and Peace

Presenters and Entertainers
The presenters at Summerset this year represent a wide and eclectic
variety of cultures and backgrounds.
Quill Mastercraft:
Quill Mastercraft is a mother, grandmother, dog lover and journalist
who lives in South Bend, Indiana. Her spiritual journey of over
three decades has given her unique insights about life and magick.
She was publisher of "Goat and Candle" and "Philosophiae Magickae",
and is author of the books (published by Spiritual Seeker Press) "Out
of His Time: The Spiritual Struggle and Magickal Writings of a Modern
Mage" - about her intimate friend and magickal brother, Grant
Pontius - and "Fulfillment of Being: Nurturing the True Self". Her
forthcoming work, "Embrace the Lightning: The Life and Insight of a
Rogue Mage" will be released in December, 2005. She is also founder
of the Grant E. Pontius Memorial Institute for Holistic Living. This
will be Quill's final personal appearance before retiring from public
speaking.
Magickal Balance - Personal balance of body, mind and spirit is, for
serious seekers, the absolute first step on the path to success in
magickal operations. This workshop will help participants understand
the need for honest self-knowledge and inner change before ever
entering the circle to work a spell or do ritual.
Nema:
Nema and World War II were born in September 1939; history has grown
increasingly more complex ever since.
Her formal education occurred in parochial schools, a convent
boarding school, and at the College of Mount St. Joseph near
Cincinnati, Ohio, where she received a B.A. in English.
In her search for transmundane knowledge and understanding, she has
relied on her experiences, and on those of her colleagues, with
vision trances, unlearned knowledge, and spiritual ecstasy,
interpreted through traditional theories, practices and beliefs.
Inspired by a document received in vision trance, Liber Pennae
Praenumbra (first published in the Cincinnati Journal of
Ceremonial Magick (CJCM), edited by Louis Martinié), Nema wrote Maat
Magick: a Guide to Self-Initiation (Samuel Weiser, Inc., 1995) to
present her version of magickal Initiatory processes and progress.
Her teachers were the writings of several experienced authors in the
Western occult tradition: Aleister Crowley, Dion Fortune, Kenneth
Grant, Frater Achad, Israel Regardie, and a few others.
Magickal Transformations
Nema will be giving a workshop called Magickal Transformations,
building on our "Counting our Blessings" theme, and adding "but don't
rest on your laurels" Nema will discuss personal transformation in
pursuit of truth and wonder, and the use of what we gain from that
pursuit in transforming into our next phase of being.
Lady Wolf Crescent Walker
Lady Wolf CrescentWalker is a 47-year-old native Ohioan, licensed
minister, 1st degree Gardnerian initiate, and 3rd degree Eclectic
Witch. A Solitaire for 7 years before pursuing coven training in
Spiral Rose Gate Ministry of Wicca, subsequently leading her own
coven for several years, and is now associated with BlackThorne
Temple. She teaches Eclectic Witchcraft privately. Wolf was a regular
contributor to "Children of Hephaestus" e-zine for disabled Pagans,
and now teaches the workshop "Welcoming the Elderly & Disabled into
Circle," among other subjects. Being an avid Middle Eastern dance
fan, Wolf has been known to drum to the point of physical injury. One
of the P3CO's charter members, she has returned to the PCCO after a
hiatus of 10+ years, and is currently serving as Chair of the Liturgy
Sub-Committee. She is the founder and moderator of the Pagan Ohio
networking list & website at Yahoo!
Lady Wolf will be giving a workshop on including the Physically
Challenged in Ritual Circle.
Boudica
Boudica is Reviews Editor and co-owner of The Wiccan/Pagan Times and
Owner of the Zodiac Bistro, both on-line publications. She is a
teacher with the CroneSpeak organization, teaching both on and off
the net and guest speaker at many festivals and gatherings. A former
New Yorker, she now resides with her husband in Ohio. She has several
articles published in various Llewellyn Annuals.
Boudica will be leading a roundtable discussion on How to included
Solitaries in the Pagan Community.
Rowan Sterling
Rowan Sterling has practiced Paganism for almost twenty years. A
Hellenic Pagan and devotee to the Mother Hera, Rowan has taught and
written on many topics of Paganism including pop culture, beginner
Wicca, Pagan bereavement, dream interpretation, Hellenic Paganism,
Pagan Christianity, and Goddess worship to name a few. In her spare
time, Rowan is currently going back to school for a library sciences
degree, loves to read, is a full time wife to The Mead Guy and the
mother of two beautiful young goddesses Meg and Maddie.
Rowan will be giving us a Pagan Parenting workshop entitled The
Mother Stage without Children.
Lady Lilith Blackthorne
Lady Lilith Blackthorn is the High Priestess of Blackthorn Temple, a
founder of the now-defunct Community Pagan Alliance, member of ADF,
licensed minister, folklorist, earth steward and organic gardener.
She is a longtime herbalist and reader/advisor in the Central Ohio
community, and is the chair of the PCCO Education Committee. She has
been known to wield scourge and wit with joyous impropriety.
Lilith will be giving us John Barleycorn must Die!-John Barleycorn
must die" ...or so the song says. The spirit of the grain, harvest
and sacrifice are the focus of pagan festivities at this time of
year. How do we honor and celebrate the Old Ways historically and in
modern times? What are some of the Hallows of this time the year? We
will discuss the concept of the spirit of the harvest, harvest
customs (particularly Celtic customs) and assemble the sacrificial
King (John Barleycorn) to be used in the Women's Ritual on Sunday.
Green Man
Greenman has been attending PCCO events for approximately six years
with his wife, Rowan Sterling, and family. Over the years, he has
taken up a passion for the making (and consumption of) the finest
beverage ever created: MEAD. In addition to creating brews suitable
for libations to the Gods, Greenman has spent the last 15 years
studying the teaching of Mystics from various traditions, both East
and West. His spiritual background has primarily been a blend of
Roman Catholicism and Druidry, but more recently he has begun to
study Asatru.
Green Man will presenting a Mead Making workshop
Mike Dangler
Michael J Dangler is Senior Druid of Three Cranes Grove, ADF, in
Columbus, OH. He's been an ADF member for 4 years, and practicing
Druidism for 9. He is also a Discoridian and Chaos Magician when the
mood strikes him. He has studied runes for a few years, learning Old
Norse in order to begin translation on the Rune Poems himself. He has
a Bachelor's degree in Military History from Ohio State and is
currently involved in Graduate-level Comparative Religious Studies at
the same institution. If you see him before or after the workshop, go
talk to him: we bet he thinks you're pretty cool and definitely
interesting.
Mike will be presenting Continental Celtic Dieties, Cernunnos and
Epona are deities that everyone in modern Celtic Paganism has heard
of. We have images of who they were and how they were worshipped, but
does this image accurately reflect the deities of the ancient Celtic
world? We'll discuss the gods and goddesses of the continent, and pay
particular attention to the so-called "trinity" of Gaulish Gods:
Esus, Taranis, Teutates
Hugin the Bard:
Hugin the Bard is a Musician who has performed with Pete Seeger and
Country Joe McDonald. He is also a Wiccan Elder who belongs to the
Morning Star Society of Native American Ceremonial Arts. Aside from
his Concert on Sunday evening, Hugin will also be seen wandering like
the bard he is throughout the festival, and he will also be doing
some work with our Childrens Coordinator in helping with the kids
workshops.
Willie Phoenix
Born in the Deep South in Camden, Alabama, Phoenix was raised on
blues music. He was taught to play guitar by his father the Reverend
Willie J. Creagh, who played with such legends as Muddy Waters,
Little Walter, and Sonny Boy Williamson 2. While growing up, he
refined his blues skills by not only learning from his father, but
also listening to music from the great bluesmen like Muddy, Elmore
James, Howlin' Wolf and many others. Phoenix was also a big fan of
the pop music created in the 60's by the British blues bands like the
Rolling Stones, Cream, the Yardbirds and the Animals. The music from
this important period in American music history still influences
Willie to this day and is most apparent in his bluesy, soulful vocals
and raw, edgy guitar playing. We are very excited to have Willie join
us this year, and we will be offering day rates on Saturday for those
fans that may only be able to come up and catch the show.
Three Cranes Grove
We are very pleased to have Three Cranes Grove with us this year to
facilitate our main ritual. Three Cranes Grove is a Provisionally
Chartered Grove of ADF (www.adf.org) that serves the Columbus,
OH area. They began open, public rituals at Samhain 2002, and all are
welcome at our rites.
Other Presenters and workshops include:
Psyche North Torok– Creating your own spells
Abigail Dow gives us Pagan Parenting, Children in Ritual Circle
Lord Shadow will give an Introduction to Aliester Crowley
Misty Dragonfly– Tarot 101
Our Women's and Men's mysteries rituals will be back this year, lead
by Lady Lilith Blackthorne and James Dillard respectively.
New this year will be Morning Meditations with Silver, early morning
guided meditations with PCCO Secretary Palemoon Silverwolf.

Summerset Rules and Customs
First and foremost, we are concerned about the safety of our
attendees. Many of the rules are designed to safeguard your safety or
the safety of others. Secondly, we can't have our attendees doing
anything that will hurt our relationship with the owners of the site.
Third, your rights extend to the point that they infringe on the
rights of others and/or violate the two principles above.
1. We don't like imposing rules on people, and are mainly counting on
people showing good sense and courtesy. Yes, we will enforce them by
removing violators from the festival if we have to, and yes, we have
in the past.
Children are the responsibility of their parents; this is a very
large site with a lake and other potential hazards. KNOW WHERE YOUR
CHILDREN ARE AT ALL TIMES. There is a midnight curfew for all
children ages 17 and under. This means they are in the tent at
midnight. Violation of this rule is grounds for expulsion from the
festival. This is a SAFETY issue.
Digging fire pits is not permitted without permission from the staff.
No festival fire may be lit without permission of the staff. No fire
jumping, once again - SAFETY.
4. Don't litter. Take your trash with you. This includes cigarette
butts. If you bring it in, you take it out. If trash is left and we
can identify the owner, we will bill you for the removal and/or ban
you from future events.
5. Attendees cannot park vehicles by their campsite. All Vehicles
must park in the designated area except those vehicles given
permission to park elsewhere by the Staff and identified with a sign
in the front window of the vehicle.
6. Sorry but the camp does not allow for clothing optional at this
location.
7. There is a no-open-container rule in effect outside the lodge and
your camp area. All beverages drunk outside the lodge or your camp
area MUST be in a non-disposable, non-glass container.
8. Please refrain from using FRS radios while at the festival as
they are being used for communication by the staff. This helps avoid
confusion.
There is no swimming or fishing in the lake.
There will be NO PETS ALLOWED at Summerset.
Firearms are not allowed onto the site.
Due to changes in policy with this camp, if you are still on the
campgrounds at 3 PM on Monday, you will be charged a $35.00 late fee.
13. Illegal and controlled substances are not allowed onto the site.
If it is illegal outside the festival grounds, it is illegal on the
festival grounds. Please act accordingly. Needless to say, this also
applies to other legal issues as well. This one will get you expelled
as well because we are not willing to jeopardize the families and
careers of our guests and staff.
Summerset Pre-registration is available.
Deadline for Pre Registration is August 27, 2005
